If you're using react-markdown to render Markdown in your React application, you might notice that code blocks don’t have syntax highlighting by default. In this post, I’ll show you how I added syntax highlighting using react-syntax-highlighter, making my Markdown renderer more visually appealing—similar to how Docusaurus does it with Prism.

Building my own pastebin in Docusaurus

Today, I embarked on a journey to solve a common problem: to quickly share small code snippets, interesting online findings, or just a simple personal todo list between me and my friends or between my different devices. Essentially a personal pastebin, but one that doesnt need any server or database, and can be operable through my docusaurus static site so as to not have to rely on other third party apps like whatsapp, slack or discord. Inspired by tools like Topaz paste which uses LZMA-JS to compress and decompress textual data on client side and base64 encoding to convert the binary data into URL safe ASCII characters. One additional feature I wanted on my site was the ability to render the decoded text as markdown to make it rich text - with syntax highlighting for code snippets, and able to render headings, todos, mermaid diagrams, etc like on github.

Having recently ditched VSCode for NeoVim, I was very excited customizing my editor experience with different themes, treesitter, lsp, utility plugins and the works. The possibilities for customization were endless, and the code for each of them was open source and available on github. When I started building spotify.nvim, my goal was simple: Learn about plugin development in NeoVim using Lua, and control Spotify directly from Neovim. What began as a small experiment turned into an insightful journey into Lua scripting, Neovim's API, and integrating external bash scripts for Spotify control.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through the process: from the initial idea to overcoming challenges, debugging, and refining the plugin.

Introduction

When building a real-time chat application, one of the key features users expect is the ability to view past conversations. Persisting chat messages ensures that users can reconnect and access their conversation history seamlessly. This functionality not only improves user experience but also opens doors to additional features like search and analytics.

In this blog, we’ll discuss why we chose to persist chat messages and why MongoDB Atlas was our database of choice. We’ll also explore the implementation details, challenges faced, and lessons learned during the process.

Building a Gym Record Bot with SQLite(Part 2: of Discord bot series)

Along with listening to music with friends, I also used discord to share my latest Gym PRs and compete with friends. So I decided to extend the music bot to also have this capability. The basic usecase was integrate a database and maintain my personal lifts, along with lifts of my friends. In the future, a leaderboard can be created for each lift.
